parturition; latin root: parturire, to bring forth; the desire to bring forth.

installation view: City of Oakland Windows Project

Mysterious piles of matter appear aside the train tracks by the Oakland Cannery from time to time; large stacks of wood, piles of stones, gravel, sand, mulch. They disappear just as mysteriously, and we who live nearby know neither from where they came or to where they go.

The PARTURITION PROJECT is focused on this strip, on the
neighborhood, on being an artist living here, and on the possibilities of "bringing forth" creativity in such an environment.

Working with photography, site materials, interaction, sculpture and documentation of the people who live by and/or walk along these tracks, I created an installation for the City of Oakland in 1997.
