the heart of the matter

The Heart of the Matter evolved from Burdens, Roots, and the Turning (3 periods of performance). I was working in the Tenderloin area, where I had an art studio, and passed my days with the wounded and forgotten.

After looking at burdens and the roots, I wanted to look at attempts of healing I saw in the streets. All day long I would see drunks, crack addicts, dopers, smokers, drinkers, fighters, talkers, con artists, street artists. Days of survival spent in a self medicated stupor.
These are the ways of healing of the street, and I wanted to explore other tools of healing than alcohol, crack, drugs, razors, fists and numbness. My emphasis in this work was on the possibility of personal autonomy in the face of the medical and pharmaceutical codex.

What medical and pharmaceutical codex?
The codex that institutionalizes someone in an acute crisis, then turns its back on them. The codex that continues to abuse, over medicate and neglect the mentally ill.

The codex we culturally agree on and happily ignore.
When you spend time with addicts at 6th and Minna, you learn a lot about the codex and its failure to deliver.
