1. Public information and education around the issues surrounding biotechnology developments, including the seed terminator. |
Based on the available science, we believe that genetic modification (GM) is much more than just an extension of selective breeding techniques. It is the actual intervention and engineering of the building blocks of life. Based on the available science, we believe that not enough is known about the long-term consequences for human health and the environment of releasing plants or animals bred in this way. Based on the available science, we believe that once introduced into the environment, GM products cannot be recalled, and may introduce a form of pollution that is self-perpetuating. We are not anti-bioengineering Luddites, rather we support the development by universities, scientists, the Departments of Agriculture and agribusiness of sustainable technologies, organic farming, environmentally sound agriculture, the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Human Genome of UNESCO, and the overwhelming call for a moratorium on cloning and the proliferation of transgenic animals and species. GM crops are not essential to feed the world's growing populations. GM animals are not essential to feed the world's growing populations. GM humans are not essential to the improvement of life on earth. We stand in unity as artists of the world to oppose this technology and proclaim the development of sustainable, ecologically sound and humane scientific development.
