I will speak to Sharon Siskin’s class Artist as Citizen: Introduction to Community-Based Arts Practice, about strategies of collaborating with community. In this Berkeley City College class, the students work collaboratively with several local non-profit organizations partnered with the class for the past six years, including Community Works West, Youth Spirit Artworks, Women’s Daytime Drop-in Center, and more. Students volunteer once a week with one community partner and eventually develop projects in response to, and in collaboration with the needs of that community.
